ABOUT
Founded in 2018, the Rockhurst Literary Journal has had many iterations, but starting in 2026, it took on the name The Squawk. The Squawk is a student-led literary journal that amplifies the creative voices of Rockhurst University students. We accept and publish poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, visual art, and photography. With a play on Rockhurst’s mascot, The Hawks, The Squawk represents a space where students can boldly share their work, express their experiences, and contribute to a growing creative community.
The Squawk was created to amplify the diverse voices of Rockhurst University students. Our mission is to lift up the voices at Rockhurst University in a positive and impactful way. Together, we work to build and celebrate a vibrant student-driven arts community. We hope students will be emboldened to share their creative endeavors with the community in order to cultivate their craft and speak to those who need their experiences put into words. As part of our Jesuit core values, we strive to find the divine in all things, including art.
Art is a collective effort to make the world and each other better by incorporating our souls into tangible work; for these reasons, we welcome anonymous submissions. Our goal is to encourage all students to participate in literature, because writing isn't just for fine arts majors; art is an inherent part of human nature.
The Squawk is supported by Rockhurst University’s English Degree Program.
